Facilities Planning Overview

Facilities Planning provides planning services to support and accommodate academic and research growth and change. It is the UBC community's first contact for:

  • new buildings
  • renovations
  • relocations
  • space adjustments

Facilities Planning initiates and coordinates capital planning for academic facilities:

  • In consultation with faculty and senior administration, predicts the space needed to achieve UBC's academic and research objectives and develops capital budgets required to fund the growth, refit and replacement of campus buildings and infrastructure.
  • Coordinates the planning and budget process for Annual Capital Allowance (ACA) funding by working with Deans, Department Heads and Directors to identify projects that support UBC's academic priorities.
  • Coordinates the UBC Renew project to provide improved academic space while mitigating Provides interface between government and UBC communities, developing multi-year plans for building and building system upgrades.

Facilities Planning works with administrators and faculty to:

  • Provide planning, functional programming, and schematic design services for new major capital projects, submissions for UBC's Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and renovations and space adjustment projects.
  • Review space requests and work to ensure the best and highest use of campus space.
  • Develop consequential move and swing space strategies for groups planning improvements.
  • Develop transparent space use policies the provide incentive to constituents to centralize, down size, share and relinquish unused space

The Space Inventory Unit:

  • Maintains UBC's Space inventory according to BC Universities Space Standards categories and provides annual reports to government.
  • Ensures the integrity of the inventory on which all government capital funding applications are based.
  • Provides space related research, planning analysis, data and advice in support of planning and development.

The Records Unit:

  • Manages information assets on behalf of UBC in compliance with legislation, legal, business, and heritage obligations.
  • Develops and maintains UBC's permanent records and ensures they are accessible, accurate, and either held permanently or disposed of as appropriate.
  • Administers an electronic document and records management system of UBC's construction, mechanical, plumbing and architectural drawings.
